Rennsteig

Many kilometres of well maintained paths, tall pine trees and rolling valleys, fresh green and radiant white, picturesque squares and inviting guesthouses – such is the Rennsteig trail in the Thuringia Forest. And it is all just minutes away from the holiday home you have chosen as accommodation for your well earned, relaxing and varied holiday.

The 170 kilometre long Kammweg in western Thuringia is Germany’s most popular long distance hiking trail and stretches from Hörschel near Eisenach to Blankenstein, passing towns such as Ruhla, Brotterode-Trusetal, Tambach-Dietharz, Oberhof, Schmiedefeld, Neuhaus, Neustadt and Masserberg. The GutsMuths Rennsteig run which takes place on the Rennsteig every year in May with over 14,000 participants is the biggest cross country run in Europe and makes a big contribution to the prominence of the trail and the local region.

Yet the Rennsteig doesn’t only offer hikers and joggers attractive surroundings – the trail is also attractive and challenging for cyclists. In the winter, active visitors can make the most of an excellently prepared skiing trail with a classic cross country skiing route, and go staking or tobogganing. Those who prefer a more peaceful time can explore the beautiful Rennsteig in the snow, enjoying the charms of the snowy surroundings. Regardless of the time of year, you always get the very best that nature can offer here! The area along the Höhenweg (high path) features many resting points which are the ideal place to put your feet up, as well as cosy and inviting guest houses which offer traditional Thuringia specialities to the hungry visitors.

You can discover and explore the nearby Rennsteig – which is just a stone’s throw away from your holiday home – on foot, by bike or on skis – the choice is yours. A wide range of service providers are pleased to assist you with help, advice and equipment for every activity. Let us bid you the traditional Thuringia greeting of those who take to the Rennsteig: “Gut Runst!”
